5 STAR REVIEW *** SUMMERS AT THE SAINT by Mary Kay Andrews

Release Date May, 2024

Summers at the Saint is a captivating tale that defies easy categorization. At first glance, it may seem like a breezy beach read, but beneath its inviting cover lies a rich tapestry of intrigue, romance, and family drama.  As they are known in town, Saints are the super-rich who buy memberships at the resort.  Ain’ts are those who can’t afford to be there but are often employed by the resort.  I must be on a small town quest lately, as many of my recent reads are set in small towns.

At the heart of the story is Traci, a resilient woman navigating the tumultuous aftermath of her husband's tragic death. Fifteen years ago, she was an Ain’t employed as a lifeguard.  She met, fell in love, and married Hoke Eddings.  They were happy until Hoke’s untimely death in a plane crash.  Despite the challenges Traci faces, from a bitter familial feud to the pressures of running a resort, Traci emerges as a formidable force, determined to honor her husband's legacy and protect visions of the future.

What sets this novel apart is its skillful blend of genres. It intertwines romantic suspense elements with chick-lit charm, creating a narrative that keeps readers guessing until the very end. The flashbacks offer glimpses into the past, weaving together the friendship, love, and mystery threads that shape Traci's world.

Central to the plot is Scott Wayland, whose arrival at the resort sets off a chain of events that will change everything. As he delves into the truth behind his half-brother's death, he finds himself drawn to Traci in unexpected ways. Is he driven by a desire for justice, or is there a desire for romance?

One of the novel's greatest strengths is its portrayal of strong female characters. Traci stands out as a beacon of resilience and determination, refusing to be sidelined or silenced in a male-dominated management team. Her unwavering commitment to her beliefs and ability to navigate the complexities of business and personal relationships make her a protagonist worth rooting for.

Kathleen McInerney's narration adds another layer of depth to the story, bringing its characters and emotions to life with skill and precision. Her ability to inhabit each role and capture the essence of the narrative ensures that listeners are fully immersed in the world of The Saints.

In conclusion, Summers at the Saint is more than just a summer read—it's a compelling journey filled with twists, turns, and unforgettable characters. Whether you're a fan of romance, mystery, or family sagas, this novel offers something for everyone, making it a must-read for any book lover.

COZY MYSTERY REVIEW *** COME SHELL OR HIGH WATER by Molly MacRae

"Come Shell or High Water" is a delightful read, blending the charm of a cozy paranormal mystery with the serene backdrop of Ocracoke Island. Maureen's journey, amidst her personal struggles and the intriguing discovery of a dead body, is a captivating exploration of  a suspect in a murder mystery and self-discovery.

The incorporation of area folklore and information about the shells found on the island adds depth to the story, creating a rich tapestry of setting and context. After a slow start, the narrative gains momentum, drawing readers into a web of ghosts, quirky characters, and an engaging mystery. I enjoyed following the clues even though I zeroed in on the wrong culprit.

As a senior reader, Maureen's character, a mature fifty-something female protagonist, offers a refreshing perspective, allowing me to connect with her experiences and emotions easily. The dynamic duo of Burt and Glady (brother and sister neighbors) adds humor and camaraderie, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the story.

Overall, "Come Shell or High Water" is a delightful blend of mystery, humor, ghostly pirates and coastal charm, making it a perfect escape for readers seeking a cozy and engaging read.  I look forward to the next book in this new series.

5 STAR REVIEW *** AUDIOBOOK *** DARLING GIRLS by Sally Hepworth

Darling Girls follows the lives of three “sisters”—Jessica, Norah, and Alicia—brought together in a picturesque foster home belonging to Miss Fairchild. Initially, the tranquil surroundings offer a glimmer of hope for a better future, but it soon becomes apparent that their new home is anything but serene. As secrets unravel and tensions escalate, the girls know they must escape, but how?

As adults, these three women still consider themselves sisters. They are always available to support each other in everything, especially their messed-up lives that are impacted by their past. When a body is found on Wild Meadows, Miss Fairchild’s property, the women are forced to return to Port Agatha, a trip they all dread. Now, they must confront their past traumas and navigate the treacherous dynamics of their foster family.

Hepworth masterfully weaves a tale of suspense and intrigue, keeping readers on the edge of their seats with each twist and turn. The reader relives the trauma as memories are recounted. The characters are richly drawn, each grappling with their demons and insecurities, which adds depth and complexity to the narrative. The author’s vivid descriptions bring the setting to life, immersing readers in the eerie atmosphere of the foster home and the lasting effects that are still in play in these women’s lives in the present.

One of the novel’s strengths is its exploration of the complexities of human relationships and the enduring impact of childhood trauma. Hepworth skillfully navigates themes of identity, resilience, and the search for belonging.

“Darling Girls” is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers and suspenseful fiction. With its compelling storyline, well-developed characters, and atmospheric setting, this novel will keep readers hooked until the very end. It is a haunting tale with an unexpected ending that will linger in readers’ minds long after they turn the final page.

Jessica Clark’s skillful narration adds depth and dimension to Sally Hepworth’s compelling narrative. Through her adept storytelling and nuanced character performances, she brings each character to life, immersing listeners in the emotional complexity of their journeys. Clark’s ability to capture the essence of each character enhances the listener’s experience, drawing them deeper into the gripping tale of suspense and intrigue. I loved it!!
